GOLDTHWAITE — The Stamford Bulldogs closed out their Region I-2A bi-district baseball series with Goldthwaite on Saturday, topping the Eagles 13-8 to clinch the sweep and advance to the area round.
The Bulldogs, who won Game 1 12-1 on Friday, had to rally in Game 2. Goldthwaite scored three runs each of the first two innings and added two more in the third to go up 8-5, a lead that stood until the sixth inning.
It was then that Stamford exploded for five runs to go up 10-8, before adding three runs in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Both teams had 12 hits, including 11 for extra bases. Stamford, which hadn’t hit a home run all season, hit three Saturday, getting one apiece from Garett Ramos, Caden Mathis and Ligon West. J.D. Davis and Ramos both had three-hit games for the Bulldogs, who improved to 14-5 with the victory.
Goldthwaite, meanwhile, got home runs from Kyle Schwartz and Hunter Parrish. Kendel Hopper added a double and a triple among his team-high three hits.
Earning the win for Stamford was Zachary Duran, who pitched 3.2 scoreless innings relief of starter Wesley Gonzales. Goldthwaite reliever Jansen Head took the loss, surrendering three runs in two-thirds of an inning.
Up next for Stamford is an area-round matchup with Van Horn. The teams will play a best-of-three series in Ozona, starting with Game 1 at 7 p.m. Thursday. Game 2 will be 1 p.m. Friday, with Game 3 to follow if necessary.
